Location and/or Description of Trip (Itinerary): | This is a re-run of a trip Mick ran a few years ago and is a nice drive through the Victoria's heritage gold fields winding its way from Daylesford to Castlemaine on forest roads and tracks. Leaving Sailors Falls we will travel on tracks through the Hepburn Regional Park. Continuing on we pass the Swiss-Italian 19th century Lavandula Farm and at Cricket Willow. We then travel through the Dry Diggings State Forest on forest roads before visiting the village of Yandoit. Crossing the Midland Highway, we then travel on forest roads and tracks through the Upper Loddon State Forest to Vaughan Mineral Springs. Next we then trek through the Castlemaine Diggings National Heritage Park where we will visit the ruins of the largest water wheel in the world, being the Garfield Waterwheel and given time, will walk the Eureka Reef Walk. The Castlemaine Diggings was once the worlds richest shallow alluvial goldfield, with the landscape we will travel through being reflective of this history. |
