Butcher Country (Cup Day Weekend) – Nov 2014

Join Club 4×4 for a trundle through the Victorian High Country.

Travelling from Walhalla we’ll cross the Thomson Dam wall and through to the Macalister River at the Macalister Gorge (on Burgoyne Gap Tk). Travel down Dingo Hill Tk and up through Butcher Country to the Howitt Plains. Then Across to Craigs Hut and back through to Mansfield.

Location:Alpine National Park (Butcher Country)
Location and/or Description of Trip (Itinerary):

Day 1:
- Service Station at Longwarry, to Walhalla, across to the Thomson Dam.
- Up to Dream Creek Track, Williamson Spur Rd, Burgoyne Gap Track crossing the Macalister River at the Macalister Gorge (see the post pic).
- Into Licola for fuel and camp somewhere near Licola, Maybe even get through to the Chromite Mine if time permits.

Day 2:
- Mt Margaret Track through to the Chromite Mine, B1 Track and then down into the Caledonia river via Dingo Hill Track.
- Camp somewhere along the Caledonia River.

Day 3:
- Back down the Caledonia River to Butcher Country Link Track, then to Butcher Country Track and up to the Howitt Plains.
- Across towards Lovicks Hut/Bluff hut. Camp the night somewere along there.

Day 4:
- Depending on how far we get on the Monday we'll maybe go via Craigs Hut back to Mansfield.

Service Station on Princes Fwy outbound just before Sand Rd. There are 2 turnoffs (one before and another after the servo).

Any specific requirements?

- Recovery gear for a Difficult rated trip (as per Club Rules).

- Must have a snorkel or carry a tarp/bra for crossing rivers (if using a tarp/bra please make sure that you know how to fit it to your car). The crossing of the Macalister river can be a difficult one depending on the water depth.

- All Terrain Tyres (in good condition) or Mud Terrains.

- Front and rear recovery points

- Camping equipment, food, drink and any other essentials need to be on board.

- The last fuel stop will be in Licola (3 days required), you will need fuel to cover you from there to Mansfield.
